Cal Pep is about the counter. Sit at the bar, let the staff steer you, and watch seafood go from griddle to plate in a minute. The cooking is plain on purpose: good fish, olive oil, salt, very little sauce. The counter is walk-in and the queue builds fast, so arrive at opening. The small dining room behind takes reservations by phone or email.
